Craig Jones is the sampler/keyboardist in the band Slipknot. He is a very individualistic person and is often said to be the darkest member of the band. Although the rest of the members did show up in public unmasked, Craig did everything he could to remain anonymous. He never gave interviews, he left the shows early to prevent being seen without a mask, and up until recently the general public had no idea what he looks like. A really creepy fellow indeed! And his mask is even creepier. His first mask was a driving helmet with spikes attached but the latest version of it is a light leather version with nine inch nails attached. His mask represents pain. The mask has really small holes for the eyes and even smaller slits for the nose while across the mouth a long silver zip is placed.
If you ever thought how it would be really cool to try to make this mask at home but you never thought that there is the possibility that it may actually work, I have good news. This article will explain how to make a good copy of the Craig’s mask, so follow the instructions step by step and you’ll be surprised how easy it was.
To make this mask you will need- tin( aluminium) foil, black and grey(or silver) duct tape, zipper, barbecue sticks and scissors.
Step one- Mould the aluminium foil so it fit your head. You can do it on your own head or on a model. After that gently cover the foil with black duct tape. Keep applying the tape until you completely cover the foil.
Step two- Cut out the holes for the eyes and apply two additional strips of tape to the top an bottom of the each eye hole. This way the shape of the eye holes will look more like a square and not like a circle. Also make a slit in the back of the mask so you can put it on without tearing it.
Step three- Measure the zipper and cut out a hole in which you will fit it. Fix the zipper from the inside by putting duct tape, or even better- use a superglue.
Step four- Now it’s time to make the spikes. Add barbecue sticks on the mask and glue them of fix them from the inside. When you have done that wrap each one of them in grey or silver duct tape so they look like the real metal spikes.
If you are a fan of the band Slipknot, or so called “maggot”, or you just want to play a little Halloween dress up, the idea of a slipknot mask has probably occurred to you. Well, these mask can be bought in shops or over the internet but the main disadvantage is their price. Official masks do look really good and you don’t have to put in an effort but the prices can be so big (especially for new editions) that you might get disappointed. The people who do want to put in a little effort and dedicated slipknot fans will be happy to know that these masks can be made at home. You can make some changes and have a completely unique mask or follow the basic pattern and make a 1:1 copy of your favorite mask. By following few simple steps and using really inexpensive materials you can make a really good slipknot mask to show off in front of your friends or for Halloween.
Step one: Get something in the size of your head. A mannequin head, a balloon or cut out and shape a piece of Styrofoam. Find as many pictures of the mask you want to make as you can. Pictures that show how the mask looks in all angles would be prefect if your goal is an identical copy of the original mask. You will also need some soft clay and sculpting tools.
Step two: Cover the head model with a good layer of clay. Mold and sculpt the clay according to the reference pictures. Use the sculpting tools to make all the details you can.
Step three: When you are finished with the clay model spray it with acrylic spray( the best one is krylon crystal clear) and then cover it up with multiple layers of plaster and burlap to get a nice hard mold. The mold should be left for at least five hours to dry. When a mold is dried take it off the head model and remove all clay remains. Pour a liquid latex into the mold and fan dry it. Do this several times until you get the thickness you want.
Step four: Return the latex mask on the head model and paint it using latex paints. When the paint is dry cut out the unnecessary latex remains and there you have it. You own, handmade slipknot mask for only a fraction of the retail price.
