Just a sneek peek on what my next is
Even if you are not a heavy metal fan I’m sure you have heard about a band called slipknot. Yes, they are very popular, not just for their music but also for their masks. So why members of Slipknot wear those masks anyway? Do they want to be original, scary, interesting, different than others? Maybe they are just ugly or have problem with showing their faces in public? Well, believe it or not- none of that. I’m sure that seeing a video, without knowing the story and ideology behind masks, will not explain much to you so I will try to bring it a little bit closer.
Well, they wear masks for two reasons. The first reason is that they want the listener not to focus on them but on their music. To listen to the music for what it is and not focus on the person that delivers it- the artist. The second reason is often called “personality switching”. Every member of slipknot has a different mask that represent their stage personality. Something like an alter ego. The masks helps to bring that dark side of the personality out, to be that and perform like that.
Becoming somebody else and being able to express yourself on many levels became very popular and the fans welcomed this. If you are a Slipknot fan you know what I’m talking about and I’m sure you already have at least one of the slipknot masks at home. If you are not a fan of this band but you are just curious about the reasons for their scary appearances, now you know it. The intention is not to give you nightmares or to make you switch the channel every time you see a video. It’s much more complex. Just think about it. Being able to be somebody else for al least a short time, to act differently, to speak differently, and then to switch off and be you old self again, you’ll agree that can be pretty cool. Right? No wonder the question “Where can I get a slipknot mask?” is heard more and more often. If you are one of the curious individuals who wonder what it would be like to be masked, then you would be happy to know that these mask are a widely available item. You can make one at home, go to a slipknot shop or order it over the internet. So simple!
This US band is not only popular for it’s modern mix of trash, heavy metal black and dead metal but also for unique public and video performances. Yes I am talking about the controversial masks. They have been accused to use masks as an advertising tool, but never the less, this unique band hasn’t lost on its popularity due to this accusations. They keep explaining that the masks are the representation of the feelings music provokes in them , and fans are just going crazy with these masks. The masks of the members have evolved from the first time this band was introduced in 1998, just like their music and the members themselves. Every one of the 9 members has a different mask that depicts his stage personality and feelings.
0. Sid Wilson wears a modified oxygen mask. He claims that he suffers from an organic brain syndrome and that he has to wear a mask to stop the oxygen from getting into his head.
1.Joey Jordison had an emotionless mask that is supposed to show that his stage personality doesn’t have emotions or hides the emotions really good. This is a traditional Japanese kabuki mask.
2. Paul Gray’s mask represents death and suffocation.
3. Chris Fehn’s mask often suffers modifications but it is recognizable by its bondage SM style and a very long nose. The meaning of it is unknown even for him.
4. Jim Root has a joker-like mask. The meaning of it is literally that, he is a prankster.
5. Craig Jones- if you ask me this dark mask is the scariest and the most complex one. The meaning of his mask is absolute pain and the mask itself is a racing helmet with spikes attached.
6. Shawn Crahan wears a clown mask. This mask represents his own death because he wants it to be funny. He actually made the mask himself.
7. Mick Thompson has a ghost-like mask that represents the hate. His mask shows the evolution and growth of the hate.
8.Corey Taylors mask is a white crash test dummy-like mask that represents the hate and the pain.
The members of the band don’t just wear masks but also wear matching full body jumpsuits and they like to refer to them selves not by names but by number 0-8. The main idea for masking is not being unique but the desire to focus on the music and not the physical presentation.
it was hard to find
I finished my Craig Slipknot mask. Its that good because I didn’t do it properly and the kebab sticks I used kept flopping about.
